FIT connect 2026: International Students as Skilled Professionals for Lower Saxony
On 9 March 2026, I had the opportunity to speak at the program “FIT connect 2026 – Between Campus and Career” at the Lower Saxony Research Center for Vehicle Technology in Braunschweig. The event brought together representatives from universities, industry and public institutions to discuss how international students can be better integrated into the labor market in Lower Saxony.
In my remarks, I addressed the growing demand for skilled professionals in Lower Saxony. Due to demographic developments—particularly the retirement of the baby boomer generation—the state is expected to lose around 750,000 workers by the mid-2030s. At the same time, vacancies remain open for increasingly longer periods, highlighting that the shortage of skilled labor has become a structural challenge.
This demand is particularly visible in the academic sector, especially in STEM disciplines, IT, the health and social sectors, and research and development. The transformation of the economy through digitalization and decarbonization will further increase the need for highly qualified professionals.
A key focus of my contribution was the importance of international professionals for Lower Saxony’s labor market. Domestic potential alone will not be sufficient to close the demographic gap. International students therefore represent a particularly valuable pool of future skilled workers: they have already studied in Germany, are familiar with the social environment, and obtain qualifications recognized by the German labor market.
To fully realize this potential, strong cooperation between universities and industry is essential. Students need opportunities to connect with companies early in their academic journey—through internships, student jobs, industry-related thesis projects and mentoring programs. At the same time, clear transition pathways from university to employment are crucial to prevent the loss of highly qualified graduates to other regions or countries.
Formats like FIT connect play an important role in building networks and creating concrete bridges between academia and the labor market.

The Travaia launch event last Thursday clearly demonstrated how important it is to shape professional transitions in a fair, transparent, and employee-centred way.
In times of major change, people need orientation, opportunities for qualification, and reliable support — and this is exactly where Travaia comes in.
I especially appreciated the discussion about what employees truly need today:

• and offers that meet people where they are

Roundtable on Global Workforce Mobility – Making Tamil Nadu the Skill Capital for Germany
I had the honour of speaking at the roundtable “Leveraging Tamil Nadu Talent for Global Opportunities: Making Tamil Nadu the Skill Capital for Germany”, organised by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) in collaboration with UNDP, the Tamil Nadu Skill Development Corporation (TNSDC), and the State Planning Commission.
In my remarks, I highlighted that Germany faces a significant shortage of skilled professionals – over 400,000 every year – while Tamil Nadu offers a dynamic, educated, and ambitious talent pool ready to contribute globally. This creates a unique opportunity to build structured, ethical, and sustainable pathways for collaboration between our two regions.
I underlined that successful mobility depends on aligning vocational training, language education, and cultural preparation with German industry standards. Equally, migration must be viewed as a deeply human experience – one that demands dignity, empathy, and inclusion at every step.
As someone who was born and educated in Tamil Nadu and has lived in Germany for nearly two decades, I see myself as part of this bridge between India and Germany. My journey from an engineering student in India to my current role as Head of Skilled Workforce Recruitment for the Government of Lower Saxony has shown me the power of learning, collaboration, and cultural understanding to shape better futures.
I truly believe that when policy, training, and human aspiration come together, Tamil Nadu can become not only the Skill Capital for Germany, but for the world.
